Special Announcement :: Newsletter of the Year
The Glue, IPMS/El Paso | Editor: Fabian Nevarez
Fabian consistently produces a colorful, easy to read newsletter in a well laid out format. Users can access past issues of "The Glue" on the chapter web site. One nice touch is the constant inclusion of photos of the models and the modelers in the club.
My Column
First let me apologize for not getting the GLUE info to Fabian in time for him to finish the June issue. I needed to write my little column but had no idea to use for it. I had planned to get this one out today--Monday, July 5--but I am just starting on it at 9:30 PM. I had a very busy day but things have finally settled down. Seems someone did a little fraudulent purchase on my credit card today. That took some time to get worked out.
I thought the meeting was a great success. Over 40 people on July 4 weekend is not too bad. I hope not too many try to attend next Sunday as the church might put them to work setting up for their Vacation Bible School which will start on Monday, July 13.
We have finished up more than half of our meetings for the year 2009. It doesn't seem possible, but it is true. Only 5 more to go this year and we still have two special shows scheduled. Our first Bassett show is on August 9, so remember to get to work, finishing those new models to display. Someone suggested that you might dust the old ones that you may need to bring.
We have forms to use for the photo shoot each month. It would help if you filled one out with your info on what you brought to the meeting whether you do the ;photo shoot or not as this would make it easier to remember what we had there.
Bring a model and Bring a friend to the next meeting on August 2.
The Meeting
We had a couple of visitors at the July meeting. Charlie Flores, one of our newest members brought his wife Ceci to the meeting. I think she had an enjoyable time and she is welcome to return anytime. Another guest was Jonathan McAuthur. He has moved here from Killeen and plans on becoming a member as soon as he can. His modeling interests include most anything. Welcome to Jon. Gus Gonzales, a member that just happens to live in McAllen was in town for the weekend and came to the meeting. It is always good to see Gus to get to visit with him. The only problem was that he did not bring any of his latest works that had won in San Antonio and Houston at their spring events.
Wow, 40 plus at the meeting. Well done, folks. You also brought some neat models to check out.
Bob Leatherman, a former club member and a guy John Estes went to college with some 50 years ago, gave the club a very large box of kits to dispose of for him. Actually, he gave them to use for door prizes or whatever the club wanted to use them for. Our thanks to Bob.
Jim McDaniel gave the club a number of car models to use for door prizes. Many thanks to Jim.
Some members have signed up for the Bassett event already. Remember to do so on August 2 at the next meeting.
Some questions have been asked about the Bassett Show to be held on August 9. The number of club members that sign up to participate will determine the amount of space each will be allotted. Usually about 2 by 6 feet is allowed. What do I bring?, has been asked. Some guys build especially for the display and do not show anything from previous shows. Others add to their collection of certain air forces, armor types, etc.
Others bring the same stuff year after year with only one or two new models added. You should bring what you want or what you think will make your display look good, even if only to yourself. The purpose is to promote the hobby of plastic modeling and to have fun as a group at the event.
Show and Tell
Mike Boudreaux had the Special Hobby kit of the Ro 57 and in the box it looks to be one of their better kits. Mike had tried to get the kit for about a month and finally gave up and ordered it on line. Bingo, and it was here in just a few days. I expect that this will be one of the next projects that Mike will bring as a work in progress.
Dane Alley had his carrier back from last month with some more work in progress on the ship. It is coming along.
Jim McDaniel had a 1/48th scale Hobbycraft F4F-3 (late model-3) Wildcat that he was able to finish this past month. I had only seen the kit in the box at Hal's and was impressed with the finished product. Jim did some very nice work on the model, especially the weathering and paint.
Fabian Nevarez had his Trumpeter Yak -18 in 1/32nd scale to show. Very Nice, indeed. If you are on line, go to Aircraft Resource Center and then go to WIP’s. Look for the Yak-18 or Fabster. There he gives a step by step progress report on building the kit. Great photos and outstanding comments from those who spend some time on ARC.
Fabian also has his Ki-61 and Ki-43 on the critique site on ARC.
Jens Ritter came up with a new idea for disposing of older builds. He had an Academy F-16A with which he was no longer pleased with his efforts as a build so he cocooned for a trip to the bone yard. at Tucson., instead of trashing it. A neat idea that will look good in a display.
Jim Davis brought two RF-4’s to show. The Black one was built from the Hasegawa kit and the Gray one was built from the Fujimi kit, both in 1/72nd scale. Both were from VMFP-3, the Eyes of the Corps, MACS, El Toro, California. Another neat idea that could be built into a theme for a display and two pretty nice models.
Mike King was back with some more Japanese aircraft in 1/72nd scale. He had a Kawasaki Ki 48 Type 99 “Lily” built from the old Mania kit, a Mitsubishi J2M Raiden built from the Hasegawa kit and a Ki (type)-27 Nate built from the Mania kit. Mike is adding to the Japanese arm of his kit collection as well as his helicopter wing.
Jerry Wells brought a HobbyBoss 1/72 scale F4U-4 painted up in the Olathe, KS, 1956 Naval Air Transitioning Unit colors. He added a new engine and a new cockpit to the kit. Very Nice.
Daniel Hunter brought a die-cast kit of the 1/6 scale Joy Ride chopper in the Custom Orange Count Choppers “Jet Bike.” This kit was offered on the Discovery Channel and honors the USAF. Interesting model.
Alexander Traver brought a 1/24th scale Revell Peterbuilt 359 hauler as a WIP.
The armor guys were in strength but did not have as much to show as they usually bring to the meetings.
Roy Lingle brought a Panzerwagen Mark IVJ command Tank from Cyber-Hobby.com in 1/35th scale and a Tamiya Mark IVJ, also in 1/35th scale.
Carl Webster had some interesting models to show,. He brought an M3A1 back dated from a Tamiya M4A2 in 1/35th scale. Another of his goodies was a Testor’s M4A1 with a turret from an M4A3 by Tamiya in 1/35th scale. His third model was an M113 Zelda with the Legend’s Armored turret, also in 1/35th scale.
